Current Status - Seeking Academic Partner

OVERVIEW

This seminar is based on the ‘Annual International Deming Research Seminar’ conducted at Fordham University (New York) from 1994-2014.

A two day seminar where Scholars & Practitioners of Dr. Deming’s ideas for management meet to present papers. Good theory, combined with the experience of application is vital for the future of leadership, organizations, and government.

The seminar will explore the highest levels of management practices and principles. The two day event provides an opportunity for academic, business, government, healthcare, non-profit, and other communities from around the world to interact in a collegial environment. Papers and presentations are sought linking Dr. Deming’s work to academic literature and other great thinkers. As well as, extend or expand the application of his workWith learning happening on both sides of the lectern.

The seminar stands boldly in the gap between the academic and business communities. Holding to the conviction that these communities need one another and are enhanced by their interaction. This event will give rise to new understandings and will lead to the emergence of new patterns of ideas, theories and principles. 

The Seminar will have three areas of focus:

  1. Link the work of Dr. Deming to academic literature
  2. Link the work of Dr. Deming to other great thinkers
  3. Examples of Dr. Deming’s work applied to organizations

Attendees will leave with exposure to different kinds of knowledge. On one side is theory and on the other side is the practical application of theory. Both types of knowledge are important and both make people better at whatever they do.

PROCESS

All presenters are required to write and present a paper, resulting in a published ‘Proceedings.’ The process would look like this:

  • Call for Papers
  • Receive abstract
  • Review (minimum two reviewers)
  • Invite submission of full paper
  • Schedule agenda - upon receipt of finished paper, and registration
  • Conduct seminar – publish abstracts
  • Publish Proceedings

FUNDING

An appropriate fee will be charged to cover the cost of the seminar. Currently projected as $495 USD (sponsorships to reduce fees are welcome). Excess funds will go into a reserve account for future seminars.

Grants will be sought to fund a reserve account to cover event guarantees. Currently estimated at $30K.

Proceedings from the seminar will be available after the seminar at a nominal cost of $50 USD.

MARKETING

Marketing will be through partners, announcements in professional publications, academic publication, articles in newsletters, general work-of-mouth, and referrals in the professional community.

Guidelines:

  • We are all learners, and seek learning with humility
  • The seminar is a chance to meet with colleagues to exchange ideas
  • A written paper is a prerequisite for presentations
  • Learning will happen in the audience or feedback from the audience
  • Presenters are participants during the rest of the seminar

WHO WAS DR. W. EDWARDS DEMING

A PIONEER IN QUALITY MANAGEMENT: Dr. W. Edwards Deming was a world renowned expert and pioneer in quality management. His approach was to reveal blind spots in modern management practices, while exploring better ways to manage. He guided leaders to shift organizations in a new direction by focusing on the quality of management, the overall quality of the organization.

ABOUT THE DEMING COOPERATIVE

Many misconceptions exist about Dr. Deming’s teachings. As time passes, his message is misstated, and misinformation spreads quickly.

Our aim is to preserve and expand his ideas, while preparing for the rediscovery of Dr. W. Edwards Deming’s teachings. Primarily his ideas of quality, productivity and competitive position through humanistic management and dignity of work.
