Situations for Capturing A Story
Stories are all around us. They are what move us, make us feel alive, and inspire us. Our appetite for stories is a reflection of the basic human need to understand patterns of life — not merely as an intellectual exercise but as a personal, emotional experience. Stories are the way to reach out to people and emotionally connect.
Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” And what’s the best way to make people feel? By telling a compelling story.
Methods of collection compelling stories:
General Guidelines - good for all recording situations
Casual Conversations - You are attending a conference, the person you are talking to starts to tell a story about how they read one of Dr. Deming’s books and describes how they changed their work environment. You ask them if they would not mind that you would like to record their story to your smartphone/tablet. They agree, and you reach into you backpack, pull out your ‘go kit’ for spur on the moment recording. Assemble everything in 60 seconds, set it on the table and go back to your conversation.
No body worries about turning it off, you just let it run. Later you upload the video to the YouTube account and send an email with all pertinent information to demingstories@gmail.com
Pre-Arranged Conversations - Worthy of the dedication and respect due to stories of interest to new learners and researchers 20 to 30 years from now. Recorded in a controlled environment where lighting and sound are optimized. Can be at the story teller’s location (home, office, conference room, and other locations) or located at a dedicated studio.
Webcam/Laptop Conversations - when face-to-face interviews are not possible. Usually setup and recorded by the person being interviewed in their own environment.
